Cura, ut valeas! Cura, ut Valeas!

Ormai sono due anni e mezzo che per uso “domestico” opero con soddisfazione con MacOS X sul mio Powerbook G4. Now two and a half years for using "home" with satisfaction working with MacOS X on my PowerBook G4.
All’inizio mi sono sentito spaesato, non conoscevo nessun comando e non riuscivo a raccapezzarmi con la struttura delle cartelle, delle applicazioni ecc. At first I felt disorientation, did not know any command and I could not raccapezzarmi with the structure of folders, applications and so on.
Soprattutto mi preoccupava la reperibilità del software: esisterà un programma che faccia questa o quella determinata cosa? I am especially worried about the availability of software: there is a program that makes this or that particular thing?
Ebbene, posso dire che ho trovato tutto quello che mi serviva! Well, I can say that I found everything that I needed! Programmi per gestire video, immagini, elaborazione di testi e fogli di calcolo. Programs to manage video, images, word processing and spreadsheets. Per non parlare di iTunes con il quale, grazie alla Airport Express posso comandare l’Home Theatre in wireless! Not to mention iTunes, with which, thanks to the Airport Express can command the Home Theater in wireless!

Ora posso dire che al lavoro, sul mio Notebook Acer, ogni tanto mi scappa qualche combinazione di tasti nella speranza di operare più velocemente! Now I can say that the work on my Acer notebook, sometimes I run a few keystrokes in the hope to work faster!

Non sono sicuramente contro Windows per partito preso. I'm not sure against Windows for this party. Quello di Microsoft era ed è un buon sistema operativo. What Microsoft was and is a good operating system. Solo che piace valutare qualcosa di alternativo e dimostrare che volendo si può anche fare a meno del software di Redmond. Oggi ho compiuto un altro passo verso l’abbandono di Windows: ho installato Ubuntu 7.10 sul mio Notebook Acer Aspire 5610Z (5613ZWLMi). Today I have taken another step towards the abandonment of Windows: I installed Ubuntu 7.10 on my Notebook Acer Aspire 5610Z (5613ZWLMi).
L’installazione è stata facilissima anche se purtroppo ci sono stati dei problemi non appena ho cercato di configurare la scheda wireless, ma dopo qualche ora di ricerca e prove (qui [ 1 , 2 ] ho trovato quello che mi serviva) mi sono collegato a internet con il wifi! The installation was easy though unfortunately there was trouble when I tried to configure the wireless card, but after a few hours of research and testing (here [1, 2] I found what I needed) I logged on internet with the wifi!

In pratica ora grazie ad Openoffice (che tra l’altro uso ormai da 3 anni), TheGimp e qualche applicazione che gira grazie a wine , spero di non dover tornare a Windows. In practice hours with Openoffice (which among other uses now 3 years), TheGimp and some application that runs through wine, I hope I do not have to go back to Windows.
Un problema potrebbe essere rappresentato dal software gestionale che abbiamo in azienda e da un visualizzatore di file dwg, ma da lunedì comincerò a testarli. Da un punto di vista hardware devo testare ancora la webcam incorporata, ma non è che ne faccio un grande uso. From a hardware point of view I have yet to test the webcam built, but is not that I make a great use.

Un’altro passo, dunque. Another step, then. Eppure non sono molto fiducioso perché non è la prima volta che al lavoro cerco di sostituire Windows per poi ritornarci dopo qualche mese.
